The dog days are over

Meet Emma. Well, actually I've never met her, but she's been on my mind for the past 2 months. That's how long it's taken me to finally wrap up this commission for one extremely patient, Karen Melson.

We had discussed this project some time ago, but it kept getting pushed back for one reason or another. When we finally agreed on what to do, I had every intention of getting this thing wrapped up in a day or two. Two problems popped up: (1) My workload started to pile up on me, and (2) I had absolutely no idea what Emma was about. I mean, I know she's a dog, but so what? There's so much more to pets than just what type of animal they are. Each one has their own personality, and as I've said before, capturing a personality is so much more important to me than to nail a likeness.

Karen supplied me with some shots of Emma, and from those shots I came up with some basic sketches (top). The problem with these sketches was that they had absolutely no personality whatsoever. I must've spent a good 2-3 hours on google researching different dogs, and how they play, etc. When I came up with the idea to draw Emma as a puppy, I was afraid Karen wasn't going to like it. Quite the contrary, she loved the idea. She even told me that she really didn't have any pictures of Emma as a puppy, so this was perfect.

All-in-all, I'm pleased with the way it came out. More importantly, Karen is pleased. I have no idea what Emma's reaction is, but I'm hoping that she feels like I've done her justice.
